Ozark Highlands Nature Center Opens

The J.B. and Johnelle Hunt Family Ozark Highlands Nature Center is officially open. This 32,000 square foot facility on over 61 acres is the newest place to learn about the natural world and outdoor recreation in Northwest Arkansas.

Admission to the nature center is free, but reserved entry tickets are required to coordinate visits and manage attendance in accordance with social-distancing guidelines. The center, located at 3400 North 40th Street in Springdale, is open 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sundays.

Activities include: seeing live wildlife and fish, learning about nature, honing your archery skills, exploring the trails and pavilions, interacting with fun and high-tech exhibits, and participating in educational activities

Springdale Cidery Wins International Awards

Out of over 450 submissions from around the world, CIDERCRAFT Magazine awarded Springdale-based Black Apple Hard Cider with Double Gold and Gold awards. The Hibiscus and Wild Berry received The Double Gold Award, and the Spiced Cider received Gold for 2020!

In addition, the Fifty Best, a guide featuring ratings/reviews from monthly judged blind tastings, held a “blind” tasting of hard ciders with a panel of 13 judges and awarded both the Wild Berry and Spiced Cider with Gold.

Black Apple is Arkansas’ first cidery, producing incredible hard cider in its natural state – clean and unadulterated with no preservatives. You can try 10+ flavors in their Downtown Springdale taproom or in bars, restaurants and retailers around Arkansas.

Marshallese Heroes: Melisa Laelan, Albious Latior Aid Community

Since March, the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette has shared some of the efforts of Northwest Arkansas heroes who worked under exhausting and dangerous conditions to help their fellow community members during the pandemic. The most recent piece profiled two of Springdale’s heroes in the Marshallese community, Melisa Laelan and Albious Latior.

As the article notes, Melisa Laelan, founder and executive director of the Arkansas Coalition of Marshallese (ACOM), and Albious Latior, a community organizer now working as Fayetteville’s Good Shepherd Lutheran Church’s Marshallese COVID-19 outreach coordinator, have worked tirelessly for 10 months to do whatever they can to support those hardest hit. It is an awe-inspiring read, check it out below.

ICYMI: We also learned that after decades of advocacy, the most recent spending bill is set to restore Medicaid eligibility for natives of the Marshall Islands—legislation that will positively impact the health of the 10,000-plus Marshallese who live in Northwest Arkansas!

Design To Renew Luther George Park Revealed

Spackman Mossop Michaels and Trahan Architects recently revealed their design for the renewal of Luther George Park located in downtown Springdale, Arkansas.

The design includes the establishment of over 200 new trees and a Performance Pavilion located on the park’s central axis – that twists and straddles the pathway to form an inviting gateway into the park. Fronting the great lawn, the pavilion will host performances of up to 3,000 people. Check out the Forbes article below.
