About

ArtCourt is for the enjoyment of the entire community and has been designed to literally play at the intersection of art and sport.

The site—which started its life as a family-owned garage in the forties—has, through the years, been home to beloved local hangouts and bars, a theater and playhouse, and most recently the much-loved Dickson Street Theater. Today, ArtCourt sits in the heart of Dickson Street’s lively nightlife scene and active pedestrian sidewalk life. It sits right alongside The Ramble, Fayetteville’s continually expanding arts and culture corridor anchored by The Walton Art Center, TheatreSquared, the Community Creative Center, FayJones Park, and George’s Majestic Lounge. ArtCourt is surrounded by numerous restaurants and bars that make up the lifeblood of Fayetteville’s downtown area—all of which are accessible by bike paths, sidewalks, and walking trails.

ArtCourt is made possible through a generous contribution from The Tyson Family Foundation, in partnership with Experience Fayetteville, as a part of their ongoing commitment to supporting thriving downtowns for the region’s diverse and evolving communities.

Artist Statement

BLKBOX: ArtCourt was commissioned to reimagine the location as an immersive and experiential community that invited play of all kinds: pickup games of basketball, a quick dance downtown, and a place to let the mind wander and inspire. Our aim was a linear playfulness: easy and full of swerve.

The site has two lives: an active nightlife and a pedestrian daytime. So, we created distinct experiences for day and night. Illumination of the designs that follows its curvature transform the experience of the space after sunset.

ArtCourt is expressive and unabashedly decorative. It was never an exercise in minimalism.
